The imaging modality chosen for this assessment was a CBCT scan, so that the site could be assessed in cross-sections at multiple anatomical planes. A limitation of 2D radiographs, like a panoramic radiograph or a PA, is that the buccal-lingual dimensions of the patient’s anatomy are unknown. Another reason why CBCT was chosen is because there is no magnification error created in the image acquisition process, thus all images are 1:1. This makes accurate measurements of CBCT scans possible, unlike 2D radiography, where there will be some magnification error depending on technique, which leads to inaccurate measurements.
This image shows the mandible in an axial cross section at the upper left, a panoramic slice at the upper right, and multiple slices of then mandible in the buccal-lingual dimension at the bottom. The inferior nerve was traced in for ease of viewing and measurements were taken in all planes. The contour of the patient’s anatomy is now known and measured in all dimensions.
